    1. My first impression is that I didn t like the book Now that I have finished it, I realize that I don t like the mother of the boy central to the story A mother dedicates her life to her son, ruining him and her husband in the process If I had children I might understand the lengths that she goes to to protect him from every little ill in the world, but all I saw was a woman who would not recognize the faults of the child she was raising or letting him deal with them I think maybe women who have [...]

    2. Yikes, this book hits a little too close to home Having grown up and attended private school in Charlotte, NC the same location as the book s setting and the fact that the mother is pretty much living an identical life to mine, this book left me feeling very uncomfortable Leaving Early shows perfectly how even the best of mothering intentions to shelter one s child from pain and harm can backfire This would be a great book club book, sure to provoke a great deal of discussion and disagreement am [...]

    4. I really liked this book The writing was very good, and the story was thought provoking but sad As a mother of an only child, I could relate to Kathryn s tendency to focus too much of her attention on her son, Early, who was her only child Did she go overboard Yes, but she had good intentions Unfortunately her overly protective and rather naive mothering prevented her son from being his own person, which could have resulted in his rather unhealthy relationship with his friend, Chip, and which ul [...]

    5. This book haunted me It could be any mother s story It made me consider that we can never really know our own children not completely We follow them down whatever path the lead us Beautifully written and perfectly capturing the emotions of a mother who loves her son and believes in him even as his actions take them both down the road to hell.

    6. Really liked this book Enjoyed it on several levels mother s observations, movie references, engaging style, etc I m going to look for other Judy Goldman books
